Martin Chasen

Dr. Martin Chasen, originally from Pretoria, South Africa, is a highly accomplished medical professional specializing in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Pretoria and later obtained advanced degrees from the University of Cape Town. Dr. Chasen has contributed significantly to the field as a founding member of the Palliative Care working group of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), holding a faculty position in ESMO education.

Dr. Chasen has extensive experience in leadership roles as the Medical Director of Palliative Care at William Osler Health System (Brampton, ON), the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, and the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital. He founded the Cancer Nutrition and Rehabilitation program at McGill University and Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Chasen was integral to obtaining ESMO accreditation for both Ottawa and Brampton sites, recognizing them for integrated oncology and palliative care.

In addition to his clinical and leadership roles, Dr. Chasen is an accomplished academic with appointments at several Canadian universities. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and was the principal investigator for the MENAC trial (Multimodal-Exercise, Nutrition and Anti-inflammatory medication for Cachexia). He was also involved numerous other clinical trials, including research for chemotherapy-induced nausea and the effects of vaporized medical cannabis on the quality of life for patients with advanced cancer.

Dr. Chasen is driven to return to direct patient care leveraging a “whole-person”, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative approach, with a focus on making a meaningful difference in the lives of people living with cancer-related fatigue, and their caregivers and families.
